A set of three wooden herb planter boxes, sized for those with a small patch of decking, a balcony rail or a kitchen windowsill to spare. These are for anyone who wants fresh herbs close to hand, without the fuss of digging out a bed or finding space for a larger trough.
Each box measures 15cm by 15cm, standing 12cm high, which is enough for a good root run for parsley, chives or thyme, and will take a young rosemary or mint if you keep it trimmed. The boxes arrive ready to use, so you can fill them straight away, or if you prefer, give them a lick of paint or stain to suit your own corner. The timber has been treated for longer life, and the construction is straightforward. deck screws hold the sides, so there is nothing to work loose in the first wet winter.
In our experience, the thing most people get wrong with small planters is overfilling them or forgetting drainage. A single herb per box is plenty, and a layer of grit or crocks at the bottom will keep roots from sitting in water. These boxes are best set where you will see them daily.herbs do better for regular picking, and you are less likely to let them dry out.
You can use these wooden herb planter boxes outdoors or in, though if you bring them in for winter, do check for slugs and other stowaways. They suit anyone who wants to grow a few herbs for the kitchen, or to keep a favourite within reach of the back door. Over time, the wood will weather and silver, which does no harm and is easily slowed with a coat of oil if you prefer.

If you are starting herbs from seed, sow thinly and thin out early, as crowding is the quickest way to disappointment. These boxes are best filled in spring or early summer, when young plants settle quickly. With a little care, you will find they last for years, and you will not need to replace them each season.
