A raised garden bed with a removable PE cover, suited to anyone who wants to grow vegetables or plants in a managed, contained space without the usual battle against weeds and waterlogging.

The box itself is built from fir wood and steel, giving it the rigidity to hold a full load of soil without bowing; the non-woven fabric lining at the base keeps the growing medium in place while still allowing water to move through freely. Four drainage holes, each 10mm across, mean that excess water clears rather than sitting and souring the roots. The planting area runs to 115 x 49cm and sits 18.5cm deep, which is sufficient for most salad crops, herbs and shallow-rooted vegetables.

The cover is where this bed earns its keep through the shoulder seasons. Made from PE, it holds warmth around young plants, takes the edge off a late frost and keeps heavier rain from compacting the surface; the roll-up design means you can open it fully on a warm day and close it again in minutes. It is worth fitting the cover properly from the start rather than reaching for it only when the forecast turns, since consistent temperature does more for germination than occasional protection.

  • Raised garden bed with PE cover; overall dimensions 121L x 55W x 117H cm
  • Planting area 115L x 49W x 18.5D cm; weight capacity 40kg
  • Fir wood and steel construction; natural wood finish, paintable
  • Non-woven fabric base liner to retain soil and reduce erosion
  • Four 10mm drainage holes
  • Roll-up cover for ventilation control
  • Assembly required

Start sowing as soon as the bed is assembled; the cover will extend your season at both ends, and a single bed of this size will keep a household in salad greens from late spring through to autumn without much intervention beyond watering and the occasional feed.
