A pair of fir wood raised beds for anyone who wants to grow on a patio, balcony or in a courtyard where there is no soil to speak of.
The two beds arrive ready to use, with no assembly required; you simply set them down, fill them, and plant. The larger measures 54 x 27 x 27 cm overall, with an internal growing area of 45.5 x 22 x 17.5 cm, and the smaller 40 x 21 x 20 cm overall, with an internal depth of 13 cm. Each will take up to 30 kg, which is sufficient for a good depth of compost and a reasonable planting.
Fir wood will weather over time, and there is no great trick to keeping it in reasonable order; a coat of exterior wood oil at the start of each season will slow the process considerably and is worth doing properly the first time. The boards are finished without burrs, so the surface is straightforward to wipe down. In our experience, the thing most people overlook with a raised bed this size is drainage: a layer of grit or broken crock at the base before the compost goes in will serve the plants far better than filling straight to the bottom.

Fill them in early spring and you will find they come into their own quickly; herbs, salad leaves and shallow-rooted annuals all do well in a depth like this. Set the larger bed where it will get the most light, and keep the smaller one close to the kitchen door if you can.
