A half-barrel planter cut from an oak whiskey barrel, standing on legs at 90 cm tall; it suits a patio, a terrace, or a sheltered corner where you want height and planting depth without giving up much ground.
The barrel has been cut vertically and set on legs, which gives it a taller, narrower profile than the more familiar horizontal half-barrel. Because it started life as a cooperage vessel, the oak carries the grain and patina of a working barrel rather than the uniform surface of new timber, and no two pieces will look quite alike. The vertical format means the planting depth is generous, which suits herbs, flowering annuals, or a small shrub that would struggle in a shallow trough.
Oak weathers rather than rots quickly, but it will change colour outdoors, greying and deepening over successive seasons. If you want to slow that process, a coat of exterior wood oil applied before the first winter will help; it is worth doing properly the first time, before the wood has had a chance to dry out. We would also suggest raising it slightly clear of standing water if your patio does not drain freely, as prolonged damp at the base will shorten its life.
The thing most people get wrong with a planter this size is filling it entirely with compost. A layer of crocks or gravel in the lower third keeps the weight manageable and the drainage honest, and the plants will not notice the difference.
- Oak whiskey barrel planter, cut vertically and set on legs
- Dimensions: 90 cm tall, 66 cm wide, 38 cm deep
- Each piece cut from an authentic used barrel; grain and patina will vary
- Suits flowers, herbs, small shrubs, or mixed seasonal planting
- Suitable for outdoor use; position where it is sheltered from the worst weather
- Oak will grey and deepen in colour over time; exterior wood oil will slow this
- Drainage recommended; add crocks or gravel before planting
Plant it up in late spring once the risk of frost has passed, and it will carry a full season's growth without needing to be moved. It works well alongside other barrel planters or against a wall where the height reads clearly.
