A reclaimed oak whisky barrel planter, halved and prepared for planting, suits anyone who wants to grow a tree, a large shrub or a specimen plant on a patio or in a courtyard without committing to a permanent bed.
Because these are genuine reclaimed whisky barrels, the oak is already seasoned and the staves are thick enough to hold a substantial root ball without warping or splitting in the way thinner timber will. Each barrel will differ slightly in colour, marking and character; that is the nature of reclaimed material, and it settles well into a garden rather than looking as though it arrived yesterday. We clean and prepare each one before dispatch, so it is ready to plant into as soon as it reaches you.
The capacity of roughly 100 litres gives roots genuine room to establish, which matters more than most people allow for when choosing a container for a tree. Olive trees, bay, fig, Japanese maple and fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum and cherry all do well here, provided you use a good loam-based compost and water consistently through the first growing season. The most common mistake is underwatering in the first summer; a barrel this size holds moisture well, but a newly planted tree in full leaf will draw it down faster than you expect.

Plant in spring or early autumn when the ground is neither frozen nor baked, and the roots will have time to settle before the hardest weather. A layer of crocks at the base and a top-dress of grit around the stem will help the barrel drain freely and keep it looking well for years to come.
