A coco coir brick is one of those quiet workhorses of the potting shed; a compressed block of coconut fibre that expands into a loose, open growing medium when water is added. At 650g, a single brick goes further than you might expect.
Coir holds water well while still allowing air to reach the roots, which is the balance that most growing media struggle to strike. It works as a soil amendment, a seed-starting medium, or the base of a potting mix, and it carries no chemical additives. Because it comes from coconut husks, it is a natural alternative to peat, which is worth bearing in mind if you have been looking to move away from it.
The thing most people get wrong is underestimating how much water the brick needs to expand fully. Give it more than you think is necessary, in a bucket rather than a tray, and let it sit for several minutes before breaking it apart. Rushing this step leaves dry pockets in the middle that will not serve your seedlings well.
Coir is particularly useful for seed sowing and for lightening heavy potting compost; it improves the structure of the mix and helps it drain without drying out too quickly between waterings.
