A hanging bird feeder cage for anyone who has watched squirrels empty a feeder in under a minute, or found that larger birds shoulder the smaller ones aside before they get a look in.

The cage works by surrounding the feeder with a galvanised metal mesh that allows small birds to pass through freely while keeping squirrels and larger species out. Blue tits, great tits, nuthatches and sparrows will come and go without difficulty; pigeons, starlings and grey squirrels will not. It is a straightforward piece of kit, and it does its job reliably.

The top unscrews for refilling, which matters more than it sounds. A feeder that is awkward to fill tends not to get filled, and an empty feeder is no use to anyone. Hang it from a branch, a wall hook or a dedicated feeding station at a height that suits the birds you are hoping to attract, and within a few days you will find the regulars have found it.

In our experience, the most common mistake is positioning the feeder too close to cover where cats can wait. A metre or so of clear space around it gives small birds time to spot a threat and leave; they will still come, and they will come back more readily if they feel safe doing so.

  • Hanging bird feeder cage with galvanised metal mesh surround
  • Deters squirrels and larger birds; small garden birds pass through freely
  • Screw-top lid for straightforward refilling
  • Suitable for hanging from a branch, hook or feeding station
  • Approximately 32cm x 24cm
  • Compatible with standard loose wild bird food

Fill it before the first cold snap of autumn, when natural food begins to thin out, and you will have birds visiting well before winter sets in. Keep the feeder topped up through to late spring, and the same individuals will return year after year.
