Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this 50gsm sheet, measuring 1.6 metres by 5 metres, is the heavier weight in the range and is suited to carrying plants through winter rather than simply taking the edge off a cool spring night.

Laid over beds, frames or individual plants, the fleece works by trapping warmth and holding humidity close to the foliage and soil beneath. Light, rainwater and air continue to pass through, so there is no need to lift it every time the sun comes out or rain is forecast. That permeability matters: a cover that excludes everything tends to cause as many problems as it solves, and you will find that plants kept under this fleece stay in better condition than those brought in and out of shelter repeatedly.

The 50gsm weight is the one to reach for when a hard frost is forecast or when you are overwintering tender plants in the ground. It raises the temperature beneath it by several degrees, which is often the difference between a plant that comes through and one that does not. The fleece is also UV-stabilised, which means it will not degrade quickly in outdoor conditions and can be folded away at the end of the season and used again the following year.

The thing most people get wrong is waiting too long to put it down. Fleece laid before the cold arrives does its job; fleece laid after a frost has already taken hold is rather too late.

  • Frost protection fleece, 50gsm weight
  • Sheet size: 1.6m x 5m
  • Permeable to light, rainwater and air
  • UV-stabilised for repeated seasonal use
  • Suited to winter protection of crops, tender perennials and overwintering brassicas
  • Other weights (17gsm, 30gsm) and sizes available separately
  • Store dry and folded between seasons to extend its working life

Lay it before the first cold spell is due, peg or weigh the edges down so wind cannot lift it, and leave it in place until the worst of the season has passed. Used and stored with a little care, a single sheet will see several winters.
