Frost protection fleece is the most straightforward way to keep cold, wind and hail off vulnerable crops; this listing is for the 50gsm weight, cut to 1.1 metres by 5 metres, which is the weight we reach for when hard frost is a genuine prospect.

The fleece works by trapping a layer of warmer air close to the plants beneath it, raising the temperature and holding a little humidity without sealing the cover entirely. Light, rainwater and air continue to pass through, so plants are not starved of what they need while they are being sheltered. This matters more than it might seem: a cover that excludes everything will cause as many problems as the frost it was meant to prevent.

The 50gsm weight is the heaviest of the three we carry, and it is the one to use through winter rather than simply at the shoulders of the season. The lighter 17gsm is well suited to spring, and the 30gsm sits between the two; but when temperatures are dropping sharply and staying low, the 50gsm is the appropriate choice. Laid over brassicas, root vegetables or tender perennials and secured at the edges, it will see them through conditions that would otherwise set the crop back considerably.

Lay it before the cold arrives rather than after; fleece applied to already-frosted foliage does little. Secured well at the edges, this sheet will store flat between seasons and give you several winters of use before it needs replacing.
