Frost protection fleece is the most straightforward way to keep cold, wind and hail off vulnerable crops; this listing is for the 50gsm weight, cut to 1.1 metres wide by 10 metres long, which suits winter protection where heavier insulation is needed.
The fleece works by trapping warmth close to the plants while still allowing light, rainwater and air to pass through. That balance matters: a cover that seals completely will cause as many problems as the frost it was meant to prevent, encouraging the damp, airless conditions in which fungal trouble takes hold. The open structure of non-woven fleece avoids this, keeping the air moving while raising the temperature beneath the cover by several degrees.
The 50gsm weight is the heaviest of the three grades we carry, and it is the one to reach for when a hard frost is forecast or when you are overwintering brassicas, root vegetables or tender perennials in the ground. The lighter 17gsm is better suited to spring, where you want a little warmth without too much insulation; the 30gsm sits between the two. Choosing the right weight is the thing most people get wrong, and it is worth doing properly the first time.
Laid over hoops or draped directly onto low-growing crops, the fleece also keeps birds and wind off young seedlings in the weeks when they are most at risk. Stored dry at the end of the season, it will last several years.
- Frost protection fleece, 50gsm weight
- Sheet size: 1.1m x 10m
- Passes light, rainwater and air; does not seal the crop
- UV-stabilised for outdoor use across multiple seasons
- Suits winter protection of brassicas, root crops and overwintering plants
- Lighter weights (17gsm, 30gsm) available on separate listings
- Store dry between uses to extend the life of the sheet
Put it in place before the cold arrives rather than after; fleece laid over already-frosted foliage does little. Weighted at the edges with soil or stones, it will sit through a week of rough weather without lifting, and you will find the crops beneath it in considerably better condition than those left uncovered.
