Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this 30gsm sheet, 3.2 metres wide and 10 metres long, suits gardeners who want reliable cover from autumn through to late spring.

The fleece works by trapping warmth and raising humidity close to the plant without sealing it off from light, rain or air. That balance matters more than it sounds: a cover that excludes water or starves plants of ventilation causes as many problems as the frost it was meant to prevent. The 30gsm weight sits in the middle of the range, heavier than the lightest spring fleece and lighter than the 50gsm winter grade, which makes it a practical choice for the shoulder seasons when temperatures shift without much warning.

Laid directly over rows or draped across frames, the fleece lets rainwater through so you are not watering blind underneath it, and enough light passes through to keep seedlings moving. It will also take the edge off hail and wind, which in an exposed kitchen garden can do as much harm as a hard frost. Kept clean and stored dry between uses, a sheet of this weight will see several seasons without trouble.

  • Frost protection fleece, 30gsm non-woven fabric
  • Sheet size: 3.2m x 10m
  • Passes light, rainwater and air; no need to lift for routine watering
  • Raises temperature and humidity beneath the cover to support germination and early growth
  • Suitable for autumn, winter and spring use; heavier than 17gsm spring fleece, lighter than 50gsm deep-winter grade
  • UV-stabilised to resist breakdown in outdoor conditions
  • 17gsm and 50gsm weights, and other sizes, available separately

Lay it out before a forecast frost rather than after, and peg or weight the edges so wind cannot get underneath. In the first season you will notice germination coming on faster and young plants holding their colour through cold snaps that would otherwise set them back.
