Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; a roll kept in the shed will earn its place from the first cold snap of autumn through to the last frost of spring. This listing is for the 30gsm weight, cut to 1.6 metres by 5 metres, which suits a kitchen garden bed or a row of overwintering brassicas well.
The fleece works by trapping a layer of warmer air close to the plants beneath it, raising the temperature and humidity just enough to keep growth ticking along when the weather turns against you. It is permeable, so light, rainwater and air continue to pass through; you are not sealing the plants in, simply taking the edge off the cold. That balance matters more than people realise, because a cover that excludes air entirely will cause the very mould and rot you were trying to avoid.
The 30gsm weight sits in the middle of the range and is the one we would reach for first. It offers more protection than the lighter 17gsm fleece, which is better suited to mild spring frosts, while remaining light enough to drape over plants without weighing down soft growth. For the hardest winter months, the 50gsm is the one to consider.
The most common mistake is waiting too long to put it down. Fleece laid before a forecast frost does its job; fleece laid the morning after does not.
- Frost protection fleece, 30gsm weight
- Sheet size: 1.6 metres x 5 metres
- Permeable to light, rainwater and air
- Raises temperature and humidity beneath the cover
- UV-stabilised for repeated seasonal use
- Suitable for vegetables, fruit and ornamentals
- 17gsm and 50gsm weights available separately, as are other sizes
Lay it before the cold arrives rather than after, anchor the edges with soil or stones to keep it from lifting in the wind, and fold it away dry at the end of the season; stored carefully, it will see several winters through.
