Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this is the 30gsm weight, 1.6 metres wide and 10 metres long, and it suits gardeners who want cover that will see them through both the shoulder months and a proper cold spell.

The fleece works by trapping warmth and raising humidity close to the plant without sealing it off from light, rain or air. That balance matters more than people realise; a cover that excludes water or starves plants of ventilation does as much harm as the frost it was meant to prevent. The 30gsm weight sits in the middle of the range, heavier than the 17gsm spring fleece and lighter than the 50gsm winter cloth, which makes it the one we reach for most often from autumn through to late spring.

Lay it directly over low-growing crops or drape it over hoops above taller plants; either way, anchor the edges well, because a fleece that lifts in the wind loses most of its benefit. The UV-stabilised material holds its structure across repeated seasons if you fold it away dry and store it out of direct light when it is not in use. Buying once and keeping it properly is rather the point.

  • Frost protection fleece, 30gsm weight
  • Sheet size: 1.6m x 10m
  • Permeable to light, rainwater and air
  • Raises temperature and humidity beneath the cover
  • UV-stabilised for repeated seasonal use
  • Suited to autumn, winter and spring use; not required in summer
  • Other sizes and weights available separately

Put it down before the first forecast frost rather than after; that is the mistake most people make in the first season. Used from early autumn, it will extend what you can harvest and bring on spring sowings a week or two ahead of an uncovered bed.
