Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this 17gsm sheet, 3.2 metres by 5 metres, suits the gardener who wants to extend the season at either end without a great deal of fuss.
At 17gsm this is the lightest of the three weights we carry, and it is the one to use from late winter into spring, when you want to take the edge off a cold night without blocking the light during the day. The fleece lets rain, air and light pass through freely, so there is no need to lift it every time the weather turns, and no risk of the plants beneath becoming drawn or starved of ventilation. Laid directly over a row of seedlings or a bed of early salad, it raises the temperature underneath by a few degrees, which is often enough to keep a late frost from doing any real damage.
The most common mistake is leaving fleece out too long into the season. Once the weather settles and pollinating insects are about, the cover should come off; plants that flower under fleece will not set fruit as they ought to. Fold it away clean and dry, and it will be ready to use again the following year.
- Frost protection fleece, 17gsm, 3.2m x 5m
- Lightweight spring-weight fleece; suited to late winter and spring use
- Permeable to light, rainwater and air
- Raises temperature beneath the cover to protect against light frost
- UV-stabilised to resist degradation in outdoor conditions
- Other sizes and weights (30gsm, 50gsm) available separately
Lay it out before a cold snap is forecast rather than after; the fleece works by holding warmth already in the soil, so early covering makes the difference. Used this way, and stored carefully between seasons, one sheet will see you through several years of spring sowings.
