Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this 17gsm sheet, measuring 1.1 metres by 5 metres, suits gardeners who want to extend the season at either end without a great deal of fuss.
At 17gsm this is the lightest of the three weights we carry, and that lightness is the point. It lets through light, rainwater and air freely, so plants beneath it continue to photosynthesise and take up water without any intervention from you. The fleece raises the temperature and humidity slightly under the cover, which is enough to encourage germination and keep tender growth moving during a cold snap in early spring or a sharp night in autumn.
The weave also buffers against hail and wind, which can do more damage to young plants than a degree or two of frost. Laid directly over a row of seedlings or draped over a frame, it keeps conditions steady when the weather is not. The UV-resistant material means it will see several seasons of use if you fold it away clean and dry at the end of each one.
The most common mistake is leaving it on too long once the weather settles; ventilation matters, and a warm, still week under fleece can encourage the conditions that lead to mould. Lift it on mild days and replace it at night until the risk has passed.
- Frost protection fleece, 17gsm, 1.1m x 5m
- Passes light, rainwater and air; no need to remove for watering
- Raises temperature and humidity beneath the cover
- Protects against frost, hail and wind
- UV-resistant material; suitable for repeated seasonal use
- Lightest of three available weights; suited to spring use and mild autumn frosts
- Other sizes and weights listed separately
Put it down at sowing time and you will find it earns its keep well before the last frost date; a single sheet used carefully over several seasons costs far less than replacing a lost row of seedlings.
