Frost protection fleece is one of those things you reach for more often than you expect; this 17gsm sheet, measuring 1.1 metres by 10 metres, suits gardeners who want to extend the season at either end without a great deal of fuss.
At 17gsm this is the lightest of the three weights we carry, and that lightness is the point. It lets through light, rainwater and air freely enough that you can lay it directly over seedlings or young plants and leave it without constant attention. Beneath it, temperatures and humidity rise a little, which encourages germination and keeps tender growth moving during the cooler weeks of early spring. It will not hold off a hard frost on its own, but for the shoulder months it does the job reliably.
The fleece is UV-stabilised, which matters if you are leaving it out over several weeks rather than lifting it each night. Anchor the edges properly, with pegs, soil or a batten along the hem; a sheet that lifts in the wind does nothing useful and wears out faster than one that stays put. Stored dry at the end of the season, folded rather than bundled, it will come back out the following year in good order.
- Frost protection fleece, 17gsm, 1.1m x 10m
- Permeable to light, rainwater and air
- Raises temperature and humidity beneath the cover
- UV-stabilised for outdoor use over extended periods
- Suited to spring use; 30gsm and 50gsm weights available separately for heavier winter protection
- Lay directly over crops or drape over hoops; secure edges to prevent wind lift
- Store dry and folded between seasons
Lay it as soon as night temperatures begin to drop in early autumn, or put it down in late winter over ground you want to warm before sowing. The 10-metre length covers a standard kitchen garden row with enough to tuck in at both ends, which is worth doing properly the first time rather than leaving the corners loose.
