A beehive house for solitary bees, painted in sea green and made from FSC® timber; it suits any garden where fruit, vegetables or flowering plants would benefit from reliable pollination close by.

Solitary bees are among the most effective pollinators in a domestic garden, working earlier in the season and in cooler conditions than honeybees, and they ask very little in return. A house like this gives them somewhere to nest and overwinter, which means they are already present when the first blossom opens. The sea green water-based paint keeps the timber in good condition through the seasons without being garish against planting or fencing. FSC® certification means the timber comes from forests managed to a verified standard, which is worth knowing when you are buying something intended to last outdoors for years.

The most common mistake is placing a bee house somewhere shaded and damp. It should face south or south-east, fixed at roughly eye height, with clear flight access and no vegetation immediately in front of the entrance holes. Once bees have begun to use it, leave it undisturbed; moving it mid-season will cause them to abandon it.

  • Beehive house for solitary bees and beneficial insects
  • Constructed from FSC® certified timber
  • Painted in sea green water-based paint
  • Suitable for wall or fence mounting, facing south or south-east
  • Provides nesting and overwintering habitat for solitary bee species
  • Supports pollination of flowers, fruit and vegetables

Put it up before the season begins rather than after, because solitary bees will establish early and return to the same site year on year. In our experience, a house that is well sited in the first spring will be in regular use by the second, and the difference to fruit set on nearby trees and soft fruit canes is noticeable.
