Why Brassica Collars and Copper Tape Are Only Half the Story for Slug Control

On a warm, damp evening in late June, they are simply getting on with things, and if you have not been paying attention, they have probably already found your brassicas, your emerging courgette plants, and whatever you were most looking forward to this season. The question is not whether slugs are a problem in a British garden. The question is whether what you are doing about them is actually working, or whether it is mostly ritual.
There is a great deal of received wisdom on this subject, passed between gardeners like a well-worn recipe, and some of it is genuinely useful. Brassica collars do help. Copper tape, under the right conditions, provides a degree of deterrent. But if these are the whole of your strategy, you are relying on two fairly passive defences while ignoring several more effective options. And if you garden on heavy clay, you may need to rethink the entire approach, because the slug population living in a wet, cold, compacted soil has resources that a free-draining sandy plot can only imagine.
What Collars and Copper Actually Do (and Don't Do)
Brassica collars work by creating a physical barrier around the base of young transplants, preventing cabbage root fly from laying eggs in the soil nearby and making it slightly more inconvenient for slugs to reach the stem at ground level. They are genuinely worth using. But a collar will not protect a plant from a slug that arrives from above, via a neighbouring leaf or a stem that overhangs the barrier, nor will it help once the plant is established and the slug's interest has shifted to the lower leaves.
Copper tape is more contentious. The theory is that copper reacts with slug mucus to produce a mild electrical deterrent. In practice, results are inconsistent. On raised beds with dry timber edges, copper tape applied cleanly and replaced regularly can reduce slug passage. On clay soil where the edges stay damp, where the tape oxidises quickly and loses adhesion, and where slugs can simply come up through the bed from below, it offers considerably less. I have tried it in my own garden on Surrey clay and found it more reassuring than effective. That is not quite the same thing.
Why Clay Soil Changes Everything
If you garden on free-draining soil, slug control is a real challenge but a manageable one. The population tends to concentrate at the surface, activity peaks predictably in wet weather, and physical deterrents work tolerably well because the slugs are not, so to speak, operating from an established underground network.
On clay soil, the picture is different. Clay holds moisture far longer than lighter soils, stays cool well into early summer, and provides slugs with exactly the damp, sheltered conditions in which they thrive and breed. More to the point, the subsoil population of slugs on clay is often considerably larger than the visible surface population. You may go out on a dry evening and see very little, and conclude that things are under control, while a healthy colony sits six inches below the surface waiting for rain. This is why gardeners on clay often find that surface deterrents, collars, tape, grit rings, and sharp sand barriers, seem to make little lasting difference. The problem is not primarily coming from where those methods are aimed.
On clay, the more productive approach is to combine cultural practices that reduce slug habitat with targeted intervention timed to when slugs are actually active and accessible. This means keeping beds as clear of dense debris as possible, particularly through late spring and early summer when populations are building. It means being thoughtful about mulching: a deep, wet mulch of grass clippings laid straight onto clay in June is, from a slug's perspective, a significant infrastructure improvement.
Timing Your Evening Patrols
The single most underrated slug control method, requiring no product, no expense, and no particular equipment beyond a torch and a bucket, is evening hand-picking, timed properly. The key word there is timed. A quick walk around the garden at nine o'clock on a dry evening will yield relatively little. A slow, methodical patrol on a warm, still night in late June or July, starting around half past ten and working through the raised beds and brassica rows with a decent torch, will often collect a remarkable number of slugs in twenty minutes.
The reason timing matters is that slug activity is strongly influenced by temperature and humidity at soil level. They become more active later on warm nights, and peak activity often occurs well after most gardeners have gone indoors. If you are going out at dusk and finding only a few, try going out two hours later and comparing the results.
Where you deposit them is a reasonable moral question. Moving them to the far end of the garden redistributes rather than resolves the issue. Dropping them into a bucket of salted water is quick and final, though it is not particularly cheerful. Those with a more equanimous approach leave them for the local hedgehog population to deal with, which is also, incidentally, a very good reason not to use slug pellets indiscriminately.
Ground Beetles and the Case for Not Being Too Tidy
Ground beetles are among the most effective natural predators of slugs and slug eggs in a British garden, and they are almost entirely absent from the gardening conversation, which seems an oversight. A single ground beetle can consume a significant number of slug eggs per night, working through the top layer of soil in exactly the conditions where slug populations build. Encouraging them costs almost nothing and requires mainly that you resist the urge to over-cultivate.
Ground beetles need undisturbed, sheltered areas at soil level: log piles, stone edges along beds, areas of permanent planting where the soil is not regularly turned. No-dig gardening naturally supports ground beetle populations, partly because the soil structure remains intact and partly because a surface mulch provides the cover they need to operate. If you are a regular digger and a very tidy gardener, you may be inadvertently making your garden more hospitable to slugs and less hospitable to the creatures that eat them.
This is also true of hedgehogs, frogs, and song thrushes, all of which eat slugs and all of which require a garden with some degree of structural complexity to find useful. A close-mown, perfectly edged garden with no long grass, no water feature, and no gap in the fence for a hedgehog to pass through is a garden doing slugs a modest favour.
Adjusting Your Watering Routine
This is perhaps the most practical and immediately actionable change most gardeners can make, and it is rarely mentioned. Watering in the early morning rather than the evening makes a measurable difference to slug activity. Soil watered in the evening stays moist through the night, precisely when slugs are most active. Soil watered in the morning has a full day to lose surface moisture before slug activity peaks. On a free-draining plot the difference may be modest. On clay, where moisture persists much longer, shifting your watering to before nine in the morning can noticeably reduce overnight slug damage, particularly to vulnerable young transplants.
This is not always possible during a heatwave, when evening watering may be the only practical option, but as a default habit through June and July it is worth establishing.
Slug Pellets: What the Current Guidance Actually Says
Ferric phosphate pellets are the only slug pellets currently approved for use in UK gardens under general wildlife safety guidelines, following the withdrawal of metaldehyde products. They are considerably safer for hedgehogs, birds, and other non-target wildlife than their predecessors, and they do work, particularly when used sparingly and placed under a tile or slate rather than scattered openly. The common mistake is to use too many: a few pellets placed precisely near a vulnerable plant are more effective, and far less likely to cause collateral harm, than a heavy scatter across the bed.
They are at their most useful as a tactical intervention for newly transplanted seedlings in the first fortnight after going out, rather than as a permanent background measure. Once plants are established and growing with some vigour, the balance shifts.
Putting It Together by Soil Type
On lighter, free-draining soil, a combination of physical barriers, morning watering, encouraging ground beetles, and targeted evening patrols through June and July will cover most of the ground. Collars on brassicas, a small number of ferric phosphate pellets near the most vulnerable transplants, and a garden that provides some habitat for natural predators.
On clay, prioritise the cultural practices: no-dig or minimal cultivation to support ground beetle populations, careful mulch management through the wetter months, morning watering as a default, and regular late-evening patrols during warm spells. Accept that copper tape and grit rings are unlikely to hold the line on their own when the soil itself is the slug's primary habitat. Work with the biology rather than around it.
