How to Plan Crop Rotation in a Small Kitchen Garden

They will do so with a mildly serious expression, as if it is the kind of thing that separates the dedicated grower from the casual dabbler. And they are not entirely wrong. But they also probably have more space than you do, and possibly fewer strong feelings about where their tomatoes go.
Crop rotation is one of those principles that sounds elegantly simple until you try to apply it to four raised beds, a permanent asparagus crown, and a growing collection of opinions about what deserves prime real estate. At that point, the textbook four-year rotation starts to look like advice written for someone with considerably more room and considerably fewer preferences. The good news is that the underlying logic is sound and genuinely worth following, even imperfectly. Understanding why rotation matters makes it much easier to decide where the rules are essential and where a sensible compromise will do you no harm.
Why Rotation Matters in the First Place
The principle behind crop rotation is not complicated. Different plant families draw different nutrients from the soil, and different families are susceptible to different soil-borne pests and diseases. Grow the same crop in the same patch year after year and you do two things simultaneously: you exhaust precisely the nutrients that crop prefers, and you allow the specific pathogens and pests that target it to build up in that patch of soil over time.
The classic examples are clubroot in brassicas and potato cyst nematode in the solanaceae family, which includes tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines as well as potatoes. Both are soil-borne problems that persist for years, sometimes decades, once established. Clubroot in particular is almost impossible to eradicate once it takes hold, which is why allotment holders treat it with something close to reverence. Moving your brassicas to a different bed each year gives any lingering spores less opportunity to find their host. It does not guarantee immunity, but it meaningfully reduces risk.
Rotation also has a positive side. Legumes, which include peas and beans, fix atmospheric nitrogen in nodules on their roots. When the plants are cut down and the roots left to break down, that nitrogen remains in the soil, ready to benefit whatever follows. Growing a leafy brassica or a heavy-feeding allium in a bed that hosted legumes the previous year is not coincidence. It is the system working as intended.
The Main Plant Families to Know
You do not need to memorise the complete taxonomy of the vegetable kingdom to rotate well. A working knowledge of four groups covers most of what a typical kitchen garden grows.
Brassicas include cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, swede, turnip, radish, and rocket. This is the family that most needs rotating, given clubroot's persistence and the family's susceptibility to cabbage root fly and white rot. If your soil is slightly acidic, liming the brassica bed each autumn also helps suppress clubroot by raising the pH to around 7.5, which the pathogen dislikes.
Solanaceae covers tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, aubergines, and chillies. Potato blight and cyst nematode are the primary concerns here. In a small raised bed garden, potatoes are often the easiest crop to rotate because they occupy space for a relatively short season. Tomatoes, as any gardener will tell you with a complicated expression, are somewhat harder to move.
Alliums are onions, garlic, leeks, spring onions, and chives. White rot is a devastating fungal disease that, once established, can render a patch effectively useless for alliums for up to twenty years. The sclerotia that carry it can lie dormant in the soil for all of that time, waiting. Moving your alliums is not optional if you have ever encountered it.
Legumes are peas and all varieties of beans. These are the most generous family in rotation terms, as they leave nitrogen behind. They are also followed naturally by brassicas in the traditional sequence, which benefits from that residual fertility.
Root vegetables, including carrots, parsnips, beetroot, and chard, do not carry the same soil-borne disease pressure but benefit from rotation in terms of soil nutrition management. They are also largely unbothered by following any of the groups above.
A Realistic Framework for Four Beds
The classic four-bed rotation assigns one family group to each bed per year and rotates them forward in sequence. In practice, it looks something like this over four years: legumes move to where the roots were, brassicas follow the legumes, alliums follow the brassicas, and roots fill in after the alliums. By year five, every crop has returned to where it started, having spent three years away from that patch.
In my own garden, this works reasonably well for most families. The challenge, as anyone managing a small kitchen garden will have already worked out, is that the groups do not fill beds equally. A bed of salad leaves, courgettes, squash, and climbing beans does not divide neatly into family blocks, and nor should it have to. The rotation framework is a guide, not a prescription, and the sensible approach is to prioritise it for the families with the highest disease risk, which means brassicas and alliums above all else.
A practical version for a four-bed kitchen garden might look like this: one bed dedicated to brassicas with the commitment to move them on each year; one bed cycling through alliums; a third rotating through legumes and following them with a heavy feeder the next season; and a fourth that handles the solanaceae family, with roots slotted in where gaps allow. The courgette, if you grow one, which will inevitably occupy more space than you planned for it, fits into the fourth bed or alongside legumes depending on your layout. It is not in any of the high-risk families, so it has a degree of flexibility.
The Tomato Problem
This is where most of us fall down. The received wisdom is that tomatoes must be rotated just like any other solanaceae crop, and in a large garden or allotment, that is straightforward. In a small kitchen garden, particularly one with a single greenhouse or a single warm south-facing wall that receives enough heat to ripen fruit reliably, moving tomatoes year on year can feel like an instruction written by someone who has never tried to grow them in Surrey.
The honest answer is that many growers do keep tomatoes in the same spot for several years running, especially under glass, with no visible consequence. The risk is real, but it is cumulative. What helps most is refreshing the growing medium. In a raised bed or container, replacing or significantly augmenting the compost each spring before planting reduces the build-up of soil-borne pathogens considerably. It is not a substitute for rotation, but it is a sensible mitigation for those years when moving the tomatoes simply is not possible.
If you grow tomatoes in containers or growbags, rotate the spent compost out entirely each year and use it on beds growing non-solanaceous crops. Start each season with fresh material and you reduce the risk meaningfully, even without moving the physical location of the plants.
Permanent Plantings and the Spaces They Take
Asparagus, perennial herbs, and fruit canes sit outside the rotation entirely because they cannot be moved each year. Asparagus in particular occupies its bed permanently once established, typically from year three onward, and the bed beside it needs to be managed accordingly rather than disrupted by annual rotation.
The most practical approach is to allocate your permanent beds a fixed position at the edge of your plan and work the rotation around them. Do not try to fit the asparagus into the brassica slot or assume it will benefit from the legume year. It exists on its own terms. Treat the surrounding annual beds as your rotation canvas and leave the permanent plantings to do what they do.
Keeping Track Without Overcomplicating It
A simple note taken in September or October, before the memory of this year's planting has faded, is worth more than an elaborate spreadsheet you will lose. Photograph your beds at harvest time if you find written records tedious. Note which family group occupied which bed and plan forward from there before the seed catalogues start arriving in January.
If you are starting a new kitchen garden this season, or reassessing an existing one before next spring, now is a reasonable moment to look at what is in the ground and sketch a plan for next year's rotation while the evidence is still in front of you. Move the brassicas on, protect the allium bed, and give the legumes somewhere fresh to work their nitrogen-fixing quiet. The rest is negotiable.
