How to Keep Container Plants Healthy Through a Dry British Summer

The trouble with containers in July is that they make no secret of their dependency. An established shrub in the border will search downward for moisture when the surface dries, roots pressing into cooler, damper layers of soil that a summer drought barely touches. A pot has no such options. The compost ends where the drainage holes begin, and when you stop providing water, the plant stops having any. This is not a criticism of container growing, which offers pleasures the open border cannot always match, but it is a condition that asks something particular of the gardener. In a dry British summer, that something is consistency, and a degree of understanding that what shows on the surface is rarely the whole story.

July this year has been warm and breezy across much of southern England, the kind of weather that looks benign enough from the kitchen window but is quietly punishing for anything growing in a pot. Wind accelerates moisture loss in a way that temperature alone does not, and a container on an exposed patio can dry to the point of stress within three or four days without any rain at all. If your terracotta pots are clustered near a south-facing wall, as many of mine are in the Surrey garden, the radiated heat at soil level makes the situation considerably worse. The signs of a plant beginning to suffer are not always the dramatic ones. A slight dullness to the foliage, a marginal curl at the leaf edges, a heaviness becoming lightness when you lift the pot slightly off the ground: these are the signals worth learning to read before the wilting starts in earnest.

Watering Deeply Rather Than Often

The instinct, when a container looks dry, is to give it a quick splash and move on. This is almost always insufficient. Compost that has partially dried will often shed water from the surface rather than absorbing it, especially in pots where the mix has compacted or shrunk away slightly from the container walls. Water poured on quickly runs down the gap between the compost and the pot, exits through the drainage holes, and leaves the root zone barely damp. The plant looks watered. It has not been watered.

Deep, slow watering is what the plant actually needs. The aim is to wet the full depth of the root zone, not just the top few centimetres. This means applying water steadily, pausing to let it absorb, and continuing until it runs freely and consistently from the drainage holes. For a large pot, this might take considerably longer than you expect, and it might involve two or three passes with the watering can rather than one. In warm weather, watering in the early morning is worth the effort: the compost has time to absorb moisture before the heat of the day, and wet foliage dries quickly enough that fungal disease is less of a concern than it would be in a cool, damp evening.

When Compost Becomes Hydrophobic

There is a particular difficulty that arises with containers that have been allowed to dry out completely at any point during the season. Peat-free composts, which most of us are now using by preference or necessity, can become genuinely hydrophobic when they dry beyond a certain point. Water simply beads on the surface and refuses to penetrate. This is not the compost failing; it is a physical property of dry organic matter, and it can be corrected, though it requires patience rather than simply pouring more water on and hoping for the best.

The most reliable method is immersion. Find a bucket, trough, or trug large enough to hold the pot, fill it with water, and lower the container in until the waterline comes to just below the pot's rim. Leave it to soak for at least twenty to thirty minutes. You will see bubbles rising from the compost as the trapped air is displaced by water, which is a satisfying indicator that absorption is genuinely happening. Once the bubbling slows and stops, the compost has drunk as deeply as it will. Lift the pot, allow the excess to drain away, and return it to its position. The plant may take a day or two to show a full recovery, but most will respond well if the stress has not gone on too long. Very wilted specimens, especially those with soft stems, occasionally do not recover. This is the honest version of that particular lesson.

Feeding Once the Nutrients Have Run Down

Watering through summer does something that is easy to overlook: it gradually depletes the nutrients in the compost. Every time water drains through a pot, a small quantity of soluble feed goes with it. Most quality multipurpose composts are formulated to support plants for roughly six to eight weeks from potting up, and anything growing vigorously in a container from May onwards will begin to show the signs of hunger by mid to late July. Pale, slightly yellowish new growth is the most common indicator. A reluctance to produce new flowers in things that should be flowering freely is another.

Liquid feeding is the most effective way to address this, because the nutrients become available to the plant quickly and directly. A high-potassium feed, such as a tomato fertiliser, suits flowering and fruiting plants particularly well during the summer months, encouraging bloom production rather than leafy growth. For foliage plants or anything in a more general role, a balanced liquid feed will do the job. Apply it at the rate recommended on the product, and do so after watering rather than to dry compost, as feeding into parched roots can cause more harm than good. Once a week through July and August is a reasonable rhythm for most containers.

For edible crops in pots, peppers, aubergines, courgettes growing in large planters, and herbs that have been in the same container since spring, this feeding programme matters considerably. A container-grown tomato that runs out of potassium in August will sulk visibly before the season is done.

The Case for Grouping Containers

There is a small but genuine effect achieved by placing containers close together rather than spacing them out across the patio in a way that might look more designed. Plants lose moisture through their leaves via transpiration, and when several containers are grouped together, the humidity in the immediate vicinity increases slightly, each plant benefiting from the moisture released by its neighbours. It is not a dramatic effect, and it will not replace watering, but it reduces the rate at which each individual pot dries out. In a prolonged dry spell, that slowing effect is worth having.

Grouping also has a practical advantage for the gardener, which is that pots gathered together are simply harder to miss during a watering round. A single container placed in isolation at the far end of the garden has a habit of being forgotten. From my own experience, the plants that suffer most in hot summers are almost always the outliers, the pot tucked beside the shed, the single pelargonium on the garden wall, the herb planter that drifted away from the kitchen door over the course of several seasonal reshuffles.

Shading and Mulching Container Compost

Two further habits are worth adopting for containers through the hottest weeks. The first is shading, or more precisely, considering where your pots are positioned in relation to direct afternoon sun. A large glazed pot in full sun from noon onwards will heat significantly, cooking the roots in a way that stresses the plant independently of moisture levels. Moving heavy containers is not always possible, but smaller ones can often be shifted to a position that receives morning sun and afternoon shade during the peak of summer without any significant loss of flowering.

The second is mulching the surface of the compost. This is something most gardeners do religiously in the border but rarely think to transfer to their containers, which is a pity. A thin layer of gravel, composted bark, or even a handful of moss laid over the surface of the compost in a large pot will meaningfully reduce evaporation from the soil surface. It takes thirty seconds per pot and extends the time between waterings noticeably. It also, on a shallow aesthetic level, looks rather good on a terrace planting where exposed compost would otherwise show.

The rhythm of container care in summer is not complicated, but it is unforgiving of gaps. Check pots daily when the weather is warm and the wind is up. Water deeply and completely rather than superficially. Feed weekly through the height of the season. If a pot has dried to the point where water runs straight through, soak rather than water. And consider whether your containers are arranged in a way that helps them hold moisture, and that helps you remember them, because both things matter equally when the sun is doing its summer work.
