How to Extend the Growing Season with a Simple Polytunnel or Cloche
Eleanor AshfordThere is a particular kind of disappointment that every British gardener knows: the moment in late May when you have nursed your tomato seedlings through weeks of indoor coddling, carried them outside with something approaching ceremony, and then watched the temperature drop overnight to four degrees. You bring them back in, naturally. You try again the following week. The garden, as ever, makes its own decisions about the calendar.
A polytunnel or a set of cloches will not give you a Mediterranean summer. Nothing will do that. But they will take the edge off British unpredictability, and in a climate where the difference between a good growing year and a mediocre one often comes down to three or four critical weeks at each end of the season, that matters considerably more than it might sound.
What You Are Actually Trying to Achieve
Before spending anything, it helps to be clear about the problem you are solving. In a typical UK growing year, the last frost date across most of England and Wales falls somewhere between late March and mid-May depending on your location, with higher ground and northern counties running later still. The first autumn frosts arrive from October onwards, though again with enormous regional variation. A garden in Surrey will behave very differently from one in Northumberland, and neither should be taking its cues from an American sowing calendar.
The practical goal of season extension is simple: you want to sow and plant earlier in spring, keep crops productive later into autumn, and protect vulnerable plants from the frost events that arrive without much warning in both directions. A cloche or polytunnel achieves this by trapping warmth and moderating temperature fluctuation. The soil underneath warms up faster in spring, germination rates improve, and young plants are not set back by a cold snap they are not yet equipped to handle.
Cloches: The Flexible, Low-Cost Option
For many home gardeners, cloches are the most sensible starting point, and they are often underestimated. A simple low tunnel, made from hoops of bent wire or lightweight metal and covered with horticultural fleece or polythene, can be erected over a single raised bed in about twenty minutes and costs almost nothing. It will bring forward your first outdoor sowings by two to three weeks in spring and extend harvest into November with remarkably little effort.
Horticultural fleece is worth favouring over polythene for most applications. It allows air and light water to pass through, reduces condensation, and is far less likely to cook your seedlings on a bright day when you have forgotten to open anything. Polythene tunnels warm the soil more aggressively and can push germination faster, but they require active ventilation management from April onwards, and a sealed polythene tunnel on an unexpectedly warm March afternoon can devastate a row of seedlings in a matter of hours.
For slug control under cloches, which is a genuine issue as the warm, moist environment is exactly the kind of invitation slugs prefer, copper tape around the base of raised bed timbers is a reasonable deterrent, though no deterrent is foolproof. Checking under cloches regularly, particularly in the early weeks, is simply part of the routine.
Cloches are well suited to salad leaves, early carrots, beetroot, and spinach. They also bring on overwintering broad beans and garlic reliably, protecting early growth from the worst of February cold without creating the artificial warmth that would encourage soft, frost-susceptible growth.
A Modest Freestanding Polytunnel
If you have the space and the inclination, a freestanding polytunnel changes the range of what you can grow without dramatically increasing the complexity of what you need to do. A tunnel of six metres by three metres, which is a reasonable size for a suburban kitchen garden without dominating the plot, will cost somewhere between two hundred and five hundred pounds depending on build quality, and can be erected over a weekend with a second pair of hands.
In a typical Surrey garden or similar southern setting, a polytunnel in this size range will allow you to start tomatoes, aubergines, and peppers from late March rather than waiting until the outdoor planting window opens in late May or early June. Cucumbers, which are far less forgiving of temperature fluctuation than most grow-your-own guides suggest, genuinely thrive in a tunnel environment. Climbing French beans, melons if you are feeling ambitious, and basil, which sulks outdoors in anything below fifteen degrees, all perform noticeably better under cover.
Heritage tomato varieties in particular, which often carry less disease resistance than modern F1 hybrids, benefit from the reduced humidity that a well-managed tunnel can maintain compared to an outdoor growing year where the weather alternates between rain and sullen cloud. Varieties like 'Brandywine' or 'Black Krim' reward polytunnel growing with flavour that their commercial counterparts cannot approach.
Managing Ventilation and Temperature
This is the point at which many new polytunnel gardeners encounter their first serious frustrations, because a structure that protects plants from cold can just as readily damage or kill them with heat.
From April through September, ventilation is not optional. On a bright day in May, the interior of a sealed polytunnel can reach thirty-five degrees or more within an hour of sunrise, which is well beyond the comfortable growing range for most crops. The door must be opened early, before you leave for work, and ideally there should be ventilation at both ends to create airflow rather than simply warming one zone to exhaustion.
Many polytunnel manufacturers offer roll-up sides or additional ventilation panels, and if you are buying new, these are worth the modest extra cost. They allow a degree of passive temperature regulation throughout the day that takes considerable pressure off the gardener. In summer, shading net can be fitted to the interior roof to reduce solar gain without eliminating the protective cover entirely.
In winter, the tunnel needs very little management beyond keeping it structurally sound and ensuring that any standing water drains away from the growing area. A polytunnel planted with overwintering salads, kale, and winter purslane requires almost no heat input in most of England, provided the cover is in good repair and there are no large gaps around the doors. The thermal mass of the soil does most of the work.
Which Crops Benefit Most
Not every crop needs protection, and it is worth being selective rather than filling a tunnel or cloching everything in sight. The plants that gain most from season extension are those that are either frost-tender and require a long growing season, or those that perform noticeably better in consistently warm and sheltered conditions.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, and peppers are the obvious beneficiaries of a polytunnel, and most experienced kitchen gardeners would say that these crops are genuinely difficult to grow well outdoors in Britain without one. Courgettes and squash can be started under cloches in late April for a planting out in May, which gives them a head start that pays dividends come August. Cut flowers, particularly dahlias and gladioli, can be brought forward by three to four weeks under a simple cloche, which matters considerably if you are growing for the house or for a late summer show.
In autumn, the tunnel comes into its own for extending the productive life of plants that have been growing outdoors all summer. Tomatoes brought inside before the first frost can continue ripening for several weeks, and a tunnel planted in late August with winter salads, lamb's lettuce, mizuna, and land cress will be productive well into January without any additional heat.
No-dig beds inside a polytunnel repay the method particularly well. The suppressed weed pressure, moisture retention, and improved soil biology that no-dig gardening encourages work in concentrated form under cover, where the absence of heavy rain means compost mulches stay in place and the soil surface remains workable throughout the year.
Starting This Season
July is not the obvious moment to be erecting a polytunnel, though if you have been considering it, late summer is actually a practical time to install one, allowing the soil inside to be prepared and settled before the autumn planting window arrives. August sowings of overwintering salads, winter spinach, and spring cabbages will benefit immediately, and you will go into the following spring with a structure already in place and a growing season ready to start earlier than your neighbour's.
For cloches, the relevant window right now is keeping established crops of courgettes, squash, and outdoor tomatoes protected on cold nights, which do still arrive without much warning in July in some parts of Britain, and planning for the autumn sowings of salad leaves that will need cover from September onwards.
The investment required, whether it is twenty pounds for a roll of horticultural fleece and some wire hoops or five hundred for a tunnel, is modest relative to what it returns in a British growing year. This is not about chasing exotic harvests. It is simply about making more of the season you actually have.
